Weezer - “Falling For You” (1996)

While I wouldn’t historically pick “Falling for You” as one of my Top 10 Weezer songs, it’s really been growing on me lately.

Not least because, at least in the context of the song (and, especially, given the record’s creepy/awesome/fetishistic pseudo-concept), this bit has to be one of my favorite Cuomo-isms:

    Holy sweet goddamn,
You left your cello in the basement.
    I admired the glowing stars
And tried to play a tune.
    I can’t believe how bad I suck. (It’s true.)
What could you possibly see in little-ol’-3-chord me?
But I do like you and you like me, too.
    I’m ready—let’s do it, baby!

I have zero idea what Mr. Cuomo’s actually (really truly) like as a fella. But, at least given the persona he builds through those first two (still. insanely. great.) records, this verse sounds pretty close to how the man’s delightfully peculiar heart probably operates.

    Love it.

    Always one of my favorites.

What’s truly astounding is that Rivers refers to himself as “little old three chord me”, and yet this song uses a chord for every single root note on the guitar.
